MNB Research · Education & EdTech

India’s education system is enormous, under-staffed, and increasingly sold online.

The constraint in Indian education is not demand. It is teacher ratios, admissions throughput and follow-up capacity — all operational problems.

The analysis

A market with two very different halves

IBEF puts the Indian edtech market at Rs. 64,875 crore, projected to reach Rs. 2,50,850 crore by 2030-31. The wider education market is projected to reach US$ 313 billion by FY30 from US$ 117 billion in FY23. IBEF publishes more than one base year for edtech on the same page; we quote the rupee series because the dollar conversions there are internally inconsistent.

The operational reality behind the growth

A 47:1 senior secondary pupil-teacher ratio is the headline, but the practical bottleneck for most institutions is admissions: enquiries arrive through digital channels at all hours, against counselling staff on fixed shifts. Digital channels drive 62% of enrolments; almost no institution answers them at 62% of the hours.

Funding has returned, selectively

All figures in this section are from IBEF’s education sector page unless stated otherwise. Edtech funding in H1 2025 rebounded roughly fivefold to about Rs. 1,071 crore across 11 deals. PhysicsWallah raised at a Rs. 23,657 crore valuation in September 2024, with SEBI approving its IPO in July 2025. Eruditus raised at Rs. 27,037 crore in October 2024. UpGrad raised from Temasek in February 2025. Capital is concentrating in fewer, larger names.
