MNB Research · Healthcare & clinics

Indian healthcare is scaling fast. Its front desk is still a phone and a register.

The clinical side of Indian healthcare has modernised far faster than the administrative side. Booking, reminders and enquiry handling remain overwhelmingly manual.

The analysis

Growth is real — and the published figures do not fully reconcile

IBEF values the hospital market at US$ 98.98 billion in 2023, growing at 8.0% CAGR to a projected US$ 193.59 billion by 2032 (IBEF, healthcare sector page). The same page values the whole healthcare sector at Rs. 31,87,668 crore in 2023 and separately states that hospitals are “nearly 80%” of the market. Those two statements do not reconcile: US$ 98.98 billion is closer to a quarter of Rs. 31,87,668 crore than to four-fifths. We publish both figures and the contradiction rather than choosing the flattering one. On the same page, healthcare spending was 3.3% of GDP in 2022, expected to rise to 5% by 2030, and medical tourism was estimated at US$ 8.71 billion in 2025, projected to reach US$ 16.21 billion by 2030.

The administrative bottleneck

Most clinics and diagnostic chains lose revenue in three places: calls missed outside working hours, appointments booked and then not attended, and repeat enquiries that consume front-desk time. None of these are clinical problems. All three are solvable with scheduling, reminders and a voice agent that does not sleep.

Consolidation is accelerating

IBEF’s healthcare sector page records that Apollo Hospitals restructured in a Rs. 2,475 crore transaction, with Advent International taking a 12.1% stake in the new entity valued at Rs. 22,481 crore and Apollo retaining at least 59.2% (IBEF, healthcare sector page). Larger groups will standardise operations first; independent clinics competing with them need the same capability at a fraction of the cost.
