Business diagnosis

Why is my business not growing?

Most businesses that stall are not failing. They are stuck because one constraint caps everything else: not enough leads, leads that do not convert, customers who do not come back, or an owner who is the bottleneck. Find the constraint first, then fix only that.

Start with three numbers

Before changing anything, write down three numbers for the last six months: new enquiries per month, the share that became customers, and how many customers bought again. Whichever number is flat or falling is where the growth stopped.

The nine most common causes

CauseHow it shows upFirst fix
Too few new enquiriesSame people, same referrals, no new namesOne repeatable channel: search, WhatsApp, partners or outbound
Slow repliesLeads go cold before anyone calls backReply within 5 minutes, automate the first response
No follow-upQuotes sent, then silenceA fixed follow-up sequence on day 1, 3 and 7
Price competitionLosing deals on price, margins shrinkingPick a niche where you are the specialist
Customers do not returnRevenue resets every monthReminders, reorders and a reason to come back
Cash stuck in receivablesSales grow, bank balance does notCollections process and payment reminders
Owner is the bottleneckNothing moves unless you approve itWrite down decisions others can make
No numbersDecisions on gut feelA weekly one-page dashboard
Wrong marketEffort is high, response is lowValidate the segment before scaling

What to fix first

  1. Find the weakest of the three numbers.
  2. Pick one fix from the table for that number and run it for 30 days.
  3. Measure the same number again. Keep what moved it; drop what did not.
  4. Only then add the next fix.

Where automation helps, and where it does not

Automation fixes slow replies, missed follow-ups, reminders and collections well, because those are repetitive. It does not fix a weak offer, the wrong market or a pricing problem. If the issue is strategy, start with a diagnosis, not software.

Questions people ask

Why is my small business not growing even though customers are happy?

Usually because new customers are not arriving fast enough, or happy customers are not buying again. Check enquiries per month and repeat purchase rate.

How long should I test a fix before changing it?

Thirty days is usually enough to see whether a lead or follow-up change moves the number, unless your sales cycle is longer.

Should I spend more on marketing?

Only if conversion and follow-up already work. More leads into a leaky process mostly increases cost.
